Face Shapes – How to tell What Face Shape you Have
To determine your face shape, you can follow these steps:
- Measure the width of your forehead, cheekbones, and jawline at their widest points.
- Measure the length of your face from the center of your hairline to the bottom of your chin.
- Compare your measurements to the characteristics of the seven face shapes (oval, round, square, oblong, diamond, heart, and pear) to determine which one best matches your face shape.
- Take into account the overall proportions and balance of your features, including your forehead, cheekbones, jawline, and chin.
Keep in mind that face shape is just one aspect of appearance and that all face shapes are unique and beautiful in their own way. At Zoe Grace Salon & Med Spa we take a signature approach in order to show our guests where they should add focal points in their har design and hair color in order to balance and uplift their face shape. Here are brief descriptions of each of the 7 main face shapes:
- Oval: Forehead is slightly wider than the chin, and the length of the face is about one and a half times the width. Cheekbones are high and face tapers to a narrow chin.
- Round: Prominent cheekbones and a rounded chin, with the width and length of the face being roughly the same.
- Square: Prominent jaw and forehead, with a square chin. The width and length of the face are roughly the same.
- Oblong: A longer face shape, with a narrow forehead, cheekbones, and jawline. The chin is slightly rounded.
- Diamond: Narrow at the forehead and jawline, with cheekbones being the widest point. Chin is pointed.
- Heart: Wider at the temples and forehead, tapering to a narrow chin. May also have a widow's peak at the hairline.
- Pear: Narrow forehead, wide cheekbones that slope down to a narrow jawline and chin.
Keep in mind that these are general descriptions and that everyone's face shape is unique. The best way to determine your face shape is to follow the steps mentioned in my previous response.
Here's a more detailed explanation of each of the 7 main face shapes:
- Oval: An oval face shape is considered to be well-proportioned and balanced, with a forehead that is slightly wider than the chin. The length of the face is about one and a half times the width, and the cheekbones are high and prominent. The face tapers to a narrow, rounded chin. Those with an oval face shape often have the ability to wear a variety of hairstyles and accessories because of the balanced features.
- Round: A round face shape is characterized by prominent cheekbones, a rounded jawline, and a rounded chin. The width and length of the face are roughly the same, giving the face a soft, circular appearance. People with a round face shape typically have full cheeks, which can make them appear younger. To make the face appear slimmer and longer, those with a round face shape can choose hairstyles that add height at the top of the head, and opt for angular frames for glasses.
- Square: A square face shape is defined by a prominent jawline and forehead, with a square chin. The width and length of the face are roughly the same, and the cheekbones are also prominent. People with a square face shape often have a strong, angular appearance, with a defined jawline. To balance the face's angular features, those with a square face shape can choose hairstyles that soften the jawline, and opt for round frames for glasses.
- Oblong: An oblong face shape is characterized by a longer face, with a narrow forehead, cheekbones, and jawline. The chin is slightly rounded, and the length of the face is much greater than the width. Those with an oblong face shape often have a slim, elongated appearance. To shorten the appearance of the face and add width, those with an oblong face shape can choose hairstyles that add fullness to the sides of the face, and opt for wider frames for glasses.
- Diamond: A diamond face shape is defined by high cheekbones that are the widest part of the face, with a narrow forehead and jawline. The chin is usually pointed. This face shape is considered to be unique and striking, with prominent cheekbones being the focal point. Those with a diamond face shape can choose hairstyles that accentuate the cheekbones and soften the forehead and jawline, and opt for frames for glasses that are wider at the temples.
- Heart: A heart face shape is defined by a wider forehead and temples, tapering to a narrow jawline and chin. Some heart-shaped faces also have a widow's peak at the hairline. This face shape is often considered romantic and youthful, with a well-defined chin being a standout feature. Those with a heart face shape can choose hairstyles that add fullness to the chin and jawline, and opt for frames for glasses that are wider at the bottom.
- Pear: A pear face shape is defined by a narrow forehead, wide cheekbones that slope down to a narrow jawline and chin. The jawline and chin are the widest parts of the face. This face shape is considered to be balanced and proportional, with a well-defined jawline being a standout feature. Those with a pear face shape can choose hairstyles that add fullness to the top of the head, and opt for frames for glasses that are wider at the top.
It's important to keep in mind that everyone's face is unique, and these are general descriptions of face shapes. The best way to determine your face shape is to follow the steps I mentioned in my previous response.
Uncommon face shapes are rare and unique variations that do not fit into the 7 main categories (oval, round, square, oblong, diamond, heart, and pear). These can include unusual combinations of features, asymmetrical shapes, or extreme variations of the common face shapes.
It's important to note that while uncommon face shapes may require more customized styling solutions, the 7 main categories still provide a good starting point for determining which hairstyles, makeup, and accessories flatter each individual face. A professional stylist or beauty consultant can help identify your face shape and provide specific recommendations based on your unique features.
Examples of uncommon face shapes may include:
- Triangular: a face shape with a wider jawline and a narrower forehead
- Rectangular: a face shape with a long, straight jawline and a similarly long forehead and chin
- Inverted Triangle: a face shape with a wider forehead and a narrower jawline
- Trapezoidal: a face shape with a straight hairline and jawline, but wider cheekbones
- Hexagonal: a face shape with straight sides and angles, similar to a square but with a wider forehead and a more prominent jawline
It's important to note that these face shapes are not widely recognized and that the above 7 main categories are still the most commonly used for determining hairstyles, makeup, and accessories. An individual with an uncommon face shape may require a more customized approach, and it is best to consult with a professional hairstylist or beauty consultant for specific recommendations.
